2010 ¡Tamalada Throw-Down! Winners Announced

Rosario’s Sweeps Third Annual Tamal Recipe Contest

 

SAN ANTONIO (April 19, 2010) - Rosario’s Mexican Café y Cantina took top honors in every category at the Third Annual ¡Tamalada Throw-Down! sponsored by Delicious Tamales on Friday night at The Spire in Sunset Station.  The kick-off event to TamaleFestSA was co-sponsored by Bolner’s Fiesta Products, Inc. and the San Antonio Restaurant Association.  It helped raise monies for culinary scholarships.


Winners in the Traditional Category:

First Place:  Rosario's, Chef/Owner Lisa Wong & Letty Canizales (Tamal de Chicharron y Pozole en Salsa Verde)

Second Place:  RK Group, Chef Chuck Large (Chicken Mole Tamal)

Third Place:  Green Vegetarian Cuisine & Coffee, Chef Mike Behrend (Tamal con Chorizo)


Winners in the Contemporary Category:

First Place:  Rosario's, Chef/Owner Lisa Wong & Letty Canizales (Tamal Vegetariano de Calabasa y Queso Fresco

Second Place:  San Antonio Food Bank Community Kitchen, Chef Mario Perez (Tamal Verde)

Third Place (tie): Aldaco’s at Sunset Station, Chef Kris Martinez and Green Vegetarian Cuisine & Coffee (Tamal Verde)

 

Winners in the Sweet Category:

First Place:  Rosario's, Chef/Owner Lisa Wong & Letty Canizales (Tamal Dulce de Pina y Nueces)

Second Place:  San Antonio Food Bank Community Kitchen (Ana’s Un Poco de Cielo)

Third Place:  Flour Power Café (Candied Jalapeño Tamal)

 

This year’s judges were:  Patricia Sharpe, Food Editor, Texas Monthly; John Griffin, Founder of SavorSA.com and Editor of Taste magazine; Bonnie Walker, Editor and Managing Partner of SavorSA.com; Ron Bechtol, Food, Wine & Spirits writer, San Antonio Current and San Antonio Magazine; Tanji Patton, Founder of GoodTastewithtanji.com; and Chris Dunn, food writer and graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in San Antonio.
